PE 105   Introduction to Canoeing / Kayaking             Spring 1998

This course will introduce the basic techniques for canoeing and kayaking. Students will be introduced to different boat types and other equipment for the sport. Basic paddle strokes for brownwater and whitewater as well as different manoeuvres will be taught. Safety issues and first aid basics will be covered. Instruction will be on land for the first half of the course: Slide shows and whitewater videos will accompany classroom lectures. For the second half of the course, students will have a chance to practice in the swimming pool and possibly in the Alibeyköy Lake.

Tentative Schedule:

  1. Introduction to canoeing and kayaking
  2. Slide show
  3. Equipment: Boats, paddles, helmets, personal flotation devices, ropes and other paddling gear.
  4. Whitewater reading
  5. Safety issues and first aid
  6. Whitewater video; midterm exam
  7. Pool session: basic paddle strokes
  8. Pool session: Eddy turns and other manoeuvres
  9. Pool session: Wet exit, eskimo rescue
  10. Pool session: Eskimo rolling
  11. Trip to Alibeyköy Lake
  12. Trip to Alibeyköy Lake
  13. Final exam in the swimming pool

Prerequisite : Good swimming ability

Grading : In-class midterm exam : 40 %

                    Homeworks : 10 %

                    Final exam in the pool : 50 %

Attendance : Required for all classes and pool sessions.

Personal Equipment : Besides swimming suits, you may need wet suits for feeling better in the pool and lake sessions.
