RESEARCH TOPICS
My primary research interest is design,
development, integration, deployment, simulation, analysis and
optimization of wireless/mobile/satellite networks. Additional research
interests include but not limited to resource allocation
and management in wireless/mobile/satellite networks, ad hoc networks,
image processing, multiuser detection, UWB
communications, neural networks, digital watermarking, distance education,
and remote laboratories. I have research connections
with international institutes (including George Washington University, University of Maryland, University of Oulu, United Arab Emirates
University, Samacom, Atwasabi ) and agencies (DARPA, NRL,
FP7, etc) for possible research projects.
The following is a short list of my research interests; by research
area, team, title, and brief summary:
Satellite Networks: Team: F. Alagöz , B. Vojcic (GWU,
USA), A. AlRustamani (Samacom, UAE), R. Pickholtz
(GWU, USA) and D. Walters (Orbital Science
Inc., USA), Title: "Integration of Direct Broadcast Satellites
into the Digital Battlefield Using Low Earth Orbit Satellites". Summary:
This work was performed as part of the
Defense Advanced Research Project Agency (DARPA) Global Mobile Information
Systems Program to the U.S. Army of Intelligence Center, AZ, USA. The
project was a joint project with Orbital Science Corp., MD, USA and Aloha
Networks, CA, USA. In this work, I primarily focused on designing,
developing and integrating the Adaptive Resource Allocation and Management
(ARAM) system within the use of a Digital Battlefield Broadcast System. I
designed, developed, tested and optimized the ARAM software, and resolved
the quality of service (QoS) problems within the network. I also processed
the digital video packets for perceptual QoS purposes in the overall system
test-bed.
MPEG Video Characteristics: Team: F. Alagöz, Title: "Investigation of the
Scene-Length Characteristics of MPEG Video Bitstreams". Summary:
In order to optimize the network resources, one should incorporate all the
available information into the network design. However, incorporating
irrelevant information may increase the design complexity and/or decrease
the performance of the network. In this work, I am investigating the
relevance of integrating the scene length characteristics of MPEG coded
video bitstreams into a Direct Broadcast Satellite networks with Return
Channel System.
Applications of Wireless Networks: Team: M. AbdelHafez (UAE
University,
UAE) and F. Alagöz. Title: "Wireless
Networks in the United Arab Emirates
University:
Testbed Development". Summary: In this work we attempt to
introduce the Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) in the United Arab
Emirates University (UAEU) students’ life. A WLAN testbed has been
implemented for technology evaluation and investigation of possible
technical solutions that suit the UAEU needs. The UAEU is moving to modern
E-learning environment that satisfy its goals of modern education in the
age of information technology. The test-bed, which presents the wireless
campus as one of the promising solutions, is based on the latest IEE802.11b
high-speed WLAN standard. Among many different vendors, the vendor was
selected for smooth migration to the new standard IEEE802.11a in future.
This work is different than other similar works done by introducing
students in the technical work. Students will be using such network and
their experience and feedback is very important. A group of senior students
were trained on the product for full implementation. The initial testing,
site survey, and complete implementation were done by university students.
After extensive use of the testbed, students had raised many questions
concerning this service and its applications. Recommendations and future
plans were presented for proper design concerning the deployment of such
network.
Image Processing: Team: F. Alagöz , M. AbdelHafez (UAE
University,
UAE), Title: "A New Error Concealment Technique Using Digital
Watermarking". Summary: In this work, we propose a new error
concealment method for covering up the high packet losses of an original
image after its transmission through an error prone-channel. In this method,
we embed a number of thumbnail images of the original image into the same
original image before the actual transmission. The motivation of this work
stems from the fact that the corrupted
regions in an image occur usually in the form of blocks or strips due to
the block coding nature of the popular image/video codecs. Initial
results show that the proposed error concealment technique is a simple yet
promising one, especially for the erroneous channels causing a wider range
of packet losses, at the expense of some degradation in the perceptual
quality of the original image. This is a consequence of the fact that the
LSB data hiding technique employed in the proposed algorithm does not
support the perceptual quality. Both human visual system and imperceptible
data hiding techniques maybe utilized to surmount the problems associated
with perceptual analysis.
Multiuser Detection: Team: F. Alagöz, Title: "A New
Suboptimum Detector Using Branch and Bound Algorithms for Bit-Synchronous
CDMA Systems". Summary: In order to reduce the complexity of
the optimum multiuser detection, I have proposed a Reduced Complexity
Maximum Likelihood (RCML) algorithm that includes a set of novel certain
boundary rules and characteristics. I have investigated the performance and
complexity tradeoffs for the RCML algorithm by conducting a set of
simulations; Maximum Likelihood (ML) detection as a reference for
performance comparisons, and relaxation based Semidefinite Programming
(SDPB) algorithm as a reference for complexity comparisons. I show that the
RCML algorithm is a promising algorithm for its computational savings over
relaxation based algorithms in lightly-to-moderately loaded CDMA systems,
and for its optimality in highly loaded CDMA systems. I am currently
working on devising a suboptimum detector based on the RCML algorithm.
Neural Networks: Team: F. Alagöz, M.A.Hafez, and N.
Kyriakapoulos (GWU, USA)
Title: "A New Multi SAW Sensor Based Neural Network Gas
Detector". Summary: Initial phase of this work is done for
Naval Research Laboratory, Washington
DC, USA.
In the current work, we propose a new multi-Surface Acoustic Wave
gas sensor based on NEural neTworks (m-SAWNET) detector for use in
chemical vapor identification, where m denotes the number of SAW
sensors. We model the signal processing aspects of the m-SAWNET
detector. Then, we present the performance results for both the m-SAWNET
and single SAWNET detectors. We show that one can benefit by combining a
few (4 or 5) SAW devices to profoundly improve the vapor recognition rate.
However, combining many SAW devices may become redundant, especially at
high noise environments. We are currently developing other m-SAW
combination techniques for better performance results.
Ultra-wideband communication systems: Team: M. AbdelHafez (UAE
University, UAE), F. Alagöz and
Matti-Latva-Aho (University of Oulu,
FINLAND)
Title: "Effect of Pulse Selection on the Capacity of
Multi-User UWB Systems". Summary: In this work, we investigate
the channel capacity with respect to pulse waveform of M-ary pulse position
modulation (PPM) ultra-wideband
(UWB) communication systems over additive white Gaussian noise channel
(AWGN). Based on Gaussian approximation for the multiple access
interference, an expression of the signal-to-noise ratio is developed for
the UWB using various forms of pulses. In addition to rectangular pulse,
Gaussian, 1st and 2nd derivative Gaussian, Laplacian,
Exponential, and Hermite pulse waveforms are studied. The effect of pulse
selection on the UWB capacity is performed in AWGN multiuser channel.
Analytical and simulation results show that the capacity of UWB system is
highly influenced by the selected pulse shape.
Remote Laboratories: Team: F. Alagöz, R. Daniel (Atwasabi,
USA), A. Koos
(Verisign,USA), Title: “Design and Development of the Remote
Protocols and Applications (REPAS) Laboratory”. Summary: We have designed and developed the Remote
Protocols and Security (REPAS) Laboratory fills a critical gap in today’s
university operated computer facilities. The REPAS Lab offers the proper
and stimulating environment to allow students and researchers to do their work with as much ease and
confidence as online banking. We are currently investigating the
wireless connection mechanism of the Remote Protocols and Security (REPAS)
Laboratory for provisioning a reliable
e-learning environment. In order to support wireless access to
the Lab two tests have been performed so far. The first test allows
wireless access away from the university by a mobile user (car with an
antenna). We were able to maintain audio and visual connection while we
drove around the Lab. The second test is based on the Ray Trace Model by
which we investigate the power performance of transmitter- receiver couple.
We study the effect of refractivity index in the atmosphere and terrain
profile that may substantially affect the propagation of
the microwaves i.e., wireless access mechanism over the surface of the
earth.
Mil-Chat: Team:
F. Alagöz, O. TAŞ, C. Ersoy, E. Anarım, T. Tuğcu (BU),
M. Abdel-Hafez (UAE University,
UAE) and R. Daniel (Atwasabi,
USA)
Title: Design and development of a new hash based instant messenger
(Mil-Chat) Summary: Recently, within the context of
e-government many organizations have been utilizing new Internet
technologies. However, speed and security are the two major dilemmas of
instant messenger systems. Although the former problem
may be cured with a better networking infrastructure, the latter needs
unique resolution strategy. It now is possible to develop a user-friendly
secure-chat system by utilizing latest developments in encryption area.
Many focus groups as well as military units are involved in research for
developing a secure-chat system. In order to enhance the secure-chat
systems, these researches include but not limited to block encryption
algorithms, key distribution protocols, reliable management mechanisms,
reliable transmission protocols, etc. In this project, we will design and
develop a new secure-chat system for nodes operating with hierarchy.
In the proposed Mil-Chat system, we will follow AES (Advanced Encryption
Standard) block encryption standard. With the help of hash functions, every
user in the system will be given a unique and ordered key. Following the
tree structure, a user will distribute the keys to users with one-level
lower order. Due to hash functionality, a user can achieve encryption keys
of the users at all lower-levels, while cannot achieve the key of any
higher-level users. Another key characteristic of the system is initial key
distribution and use of Secure Chat Server (SCS) for particular services.
We will utilize a modified Secure & Simple (SAS) protocol for the
initial key distribution. In order to test security and reliability of the
Mil-Chat system against intentional/unintentional attacks from
inside/outside a testbed will be designed and implemented. Various
Mil-Chat versions including appropriate interfaces will be ready to
go. Performance measures and analysis will be investigated.
Additionally, the testbed will be used to study and support ongoing
researches on secure-chat and security in the next generation satellite
networks.
Cognitive Radio Networks: Team: F. Alagöz, T.Tugcu, D. Gözüpek, S. Bayhan, D. Çavdar Title: SINCERE:
Scheduling in INfrastructure based CognitivE Radio nEtworks
Summary:Inefficient spectrum utilization has fostered the research
studies that focus on new communication paradigms referred to as dynamic
spectrum access (DSA). Cognitive radio concept, on the other hand, is the
technology that can actualize the DSA concept. The idea of enhancing the
spectrum utilization by opportunistically using the spatio-temporally
unoccupied portions of the spectrum constitutes the very “raison d‟ętre‟ of
cognitive radio. The scheduling algorithms that will be developed in this
project can be compartmentalized into two groups. The schedulers in the
first group focus on the data transmission of the Secondary Users, whereas
the ones in the second group concentrate on the transmission of sensing
information. The common features of the schedulers in the first group is
that all of them ensure that the Primary Users in the service area of the
CBS are not disturbed, no collisions occur among the SUs, and reliable
communication with the CBS is maintained.
