  CONTRASTS WITHIN A TYPEFACE

Univers

Univers is a typeface which provides the typographer to achieve contrasts in style (roman-italic), in weight (ultralight, light, regular, bold, extrabold, black, ultrablack ) and in width (condensed-extended). Below is a table with two digit identifiers (a system devised by Adrian Frutiger, the designer). First digit is used to indicate the relative position in the vertical weight axis, the second digit provides the position in the horizontal width axis. Even numbers are used for italics. 55 is regular upright roman. Note that changes in weight and width are not mathematical transformations of 55. Each one is the redesign of the original for that particular position.
