General Information on Doctor of Philosophy in Computer Engineering

The Ph. D. program in Computer Engineering requires the completion of at least 24 credits of course work and a Ph. D. Dissertation.

Those who have M. S. degrees in related areas may also apply but will be required to take additional courses. Those who have graduated from an M.S. program without thesis, will be additionally required to take CMPE691 (first semester) and CMPE692 (second semester) to complete their M.S. thesis.

Ph. D. Program Rules (Set by the Department)

  • Applicants to the Ph. D. program in Computer Engineering have to include a declaration about their intentions about the subject and nature of their dissertation study in their applications. This information is used in the evaluation of the Ph. D. application.
  • The courses to be taken are selected so that the student will gain "both breadth and width," as the related Department Board Decision puts it. The student takes the Analysis of Algorithms and the Theory of Computation courses non-credit, if she has not taken them before. The student must take at least six graduate-level courses, at least three of which should be CmpE courses. The remaining courses have to be selected so that they will form a firm basis in at least one of the following areas:
    • -System Theory
    • -Advanced Mathematics
    • -Mathematical Programming
    • -Network Theory/Queueing Theory
  • As part of the Doctoral Qualification Examination, the student takes a written examination which will measure her knowledge about the fundamental topics of Computer Engineering.
  • The student who has passed the qualification examinations agrees with an advisor from among the full-time faculty members of the department to prepare her Ph. D. Dissertation Proposal. For this student, a Dissertation Committee, consisting of at least three faculty members (including the advisor) is formed with the proposal of the advisor and the approval of the Department Board. The student defends her written Dissertation Proposal in front of this committee. The Dissertation Committee informs the Department Board about the result with a report. The student starts her dissertation study after the acceptance of the Dissertation Proposal by the Dissertation Committee.
  • Ph. D. students should either work as assistants for two courses or give a series of seminars during their Ph. D. studies.
  • The student who has completed her dissertation study prepares a journal paper about her dissertation and submits it for publication to an international journal before defending her dissertation.
  • The student who has completed her Ph. D. dissertation and satisfied the requirement of the above paragraph defends her dissertation in front of a jury, according to the rules specified in the B.U. Graduate Education By-law.
