Term paper, Assigned: 3.3.2005, Due: 4.4.2005, 12:00 noon

 

Possible term paper subjects are as follows: The subjects below are indicative, you must select rather a very narrow area within these subjects.

 

·        Security concepts and policies, security policy documents, security models for confidentialty and integrity, trusted systems, formal models of security, verification

·        Conventional and Public Key Cryptology : Various conventional and public key encryption techniques and algorithms, cryptanalysis, cryptosystems, key management, number theory issues

·        Authentication and Digital Signatures : Checksums, hash functions, digital signatures, certificates, authentication protocols, Kerberos, X.509, legal situation on digital signatures in Turkey, European Union and US

·        UNIX/LINUX Security Issues, password management

·        Security Issues of Other Operating Systems : Windows, Solaris, HPUX, etc

·        Communication and Network Security : Physical layer and data link layer security issues, general TCP/IP security issues at network and transport layers, IP security, SSL

·        NFS security, email security, FTP and Telnet security, web security, network management security

·        JAVA security, Kerberos software, malicious software,viruses, worms

·        Firewalls and Intrusion Detection: Concepts, packet filtering

·        Security of Digital Money and Payment Systems : Principles, protocols

·        OS/Network Security Tools, Hacker tools

 

You must read 4-6 research papers in a related area of your choice and write a paper not less than 8 pages long, 1.5 space. Use A4 paper, with 2.5cm margins and a reasonablo font like Times New Roman or Bookman. Papers should be scientific, preferably theoretical but not technological. Typical journals from which you can select your research papers include IEEE Communications, IEEE/ACM Transactions on Networking, Communications of ACM, IEEE Networks, etc. You should carefuly explain your understanding of the subject using your own words (your own English, even if it is broken..!).

 

Your paper must have the following sections :

-        Title, author name and lastname, address of the author, email address

-        Abstract (around 300 words)

-        Introduction (what is the subject, the importance of the subject, the relation of the selected subject to nearby subjects, what has been done  in this paper)

-        One or more sections on the specifics of the selected subject and a comparative evaluation

-        Conclusions, including the expected future work

-        References, must clearly identify which papers you have read to write your paper. A separate list may include other relevant papers, technical reports, books etc. related to the area of your selection, referenced by other authors but you did not have time to read. All references must be referenced in the text in the form [lastname NNNN], where lastname is the lastname of the first author of the publication and NNNN is the publication year.

 

Grading : Paper content is 70% (subject selection 20%) and form (cover page, introduction, body of the paper, conclusion, references) 30%.
